These beats were originally made for my live accompaniment to the silent film L’Inhumaine by Marcel L’Herbier (1924)
I was commissioned by the University of Venice to present it as part of a seminar titled Fashion Apertura: Uchronia And Utopian Fashion presented by Alessandra Vaccari and Caroline Evans at Palazzo Grassi in Venice in 2019.
Composer Darius Milhaud had been commissioned to write a score, to be played live, for the 1924 screening, however, his score has been lost and the only clue we have about it was that it was very percussive.
Taking this clue I also made a very percussion heavy score with addition of space for me to improvise over.
This version here is a heavily processed version of those original beats with the addition of Lap Steel Electric guitar on top. The beats reflect my interest in the London Jungle scene of the late 80s early 90s and my obsession with Lap Steel Guitar as played in almost every musical culture in the world.
